Neutral Colors, Calm Backdrop

For the Taurus that loves to indulge their senses and decorate with sensual fabrics, texture, pattern and a mix of handicrafts, neutral wall color works well and provides a calm backdrop.
But, neutral does not have to mean your only color options are white or off-white.

Mother Earth’s base palette are colors that are comforting and familair and a big part of the neutral colors.
Neutral colors are symbolic of wholeness and unity and have a grounding effect on a room, giving a feeling of security (very important to a Taurus) and balance.
Neutrals can help with an overactive mind, anxiety and relationship problems.
With Taurus being an Earth element sign, using earthy neutrals that we see everyday such as sand, soil, seashells, tree bark, rocks and stone are great for color inspiration.

Variations of taupe, gray, brown, black, earthy greens, and all the variations of white give you plenty of options.
For the Taurus home, take a look at what natural/earthy elements you are drawn to - Pottery? Stone? Metals? A type of wood? Baskets? Natural fabrics? Do you find yourself drawn to one particular color within any of those?

Take the colors found in those elements you love the most and use that as the starting point for your wall color choices.

Most paint stores can create the exact color of an item/fabric that you take into the store.
From that color, look at monochromatic or analogous color palettes.
Mono-chromatic is using: tint (color + white) tone (color + gray)  or shade (color + black) of one color.
Anagolous colors sit next to each other on the color wheel. Take the color you like and look at the colors at each side of it for an analogous pallette.

With this serene monochromatic room, pattern and texture takes center stage.

Neutral does not have to be boring and can be the perfect backdrop for your collections of handicrafts, pottery, plants and works beautifully with earthy/natural furnishings.

Choosing Color For Your Home

We are all effected by the colors around us, even if we don’t pay attention to how certain colors make us feel. We each have colors that we are drawn to, that make us peaceful, comfortable or cold and uneasy. We are energy and color is energy. In the same way that certain foods or sounds have a positive or negative effect on us, the same applies to color.
You can be cared for and nourished through color.
How do you choose what colors are used in your home? Do you know what colors effect you in what way?
Whatever colors you are emotionally or intuitively drawn to are the colors you should use.
Even when I list certain colors with each astrological sign, I only do so, as with all of my sign style posts, as a way to narrow down and focus on a particular style element.
While I see many of my friends/families style characteristics corresponding to their astrological sign in their home decorating, I fully believe that we need to decorate from our heart and soul. There really are no hard and fast rules, just guidelines to check out, use or toss.

I would love to know how you choose the colors you decorate with. Would you please take a moment to take the poll?
If how you choose your colors is not listed on the poll, please leave a comment and let me know how you choose your colors. And, if you are a Taurus, what colors do you use in your interior decorating?

A Bedroom Retreat

Create Your Own Bedroom Retreat

The Bedroom. A place to reflect after a hard day and to dream of what tomorrow holds.

Your bedroom is your place of retreat, a sanctuary where you can escape the daily stress of your life and take a moment to surround yourself with luxurious fabrics and warm plush pillows.

If this does not sound like something you can do in your current bedroom, you maybe in need of a makeover or maybe just a sprucing up. Don’t panic, achieving that first class hotel experience in your own bedroom is easier than you might think. Here’s how to start.

Remove the Clutter
Anything that does not contribute to your relaxation or resting needs to be removed from your bedroom. Laundry can be stored somewhere else and anything that reminds you of work or bills should be out of site. Keep relaxation in and work out.

Start with the Walls
The walls are an excellent place to add a little color to your space and are relatively inexpensive to do. Choose a color that calms your senses. Typically pastels, blues, or greens are restful colors. Researchers have found that colors of the night such as blues, indigos and violets can decrease blood pressure, pulse and respiration rates.

Add the Basics
Next, add your furniture. Remember that open space is ok and in fact adds a feeling of serenity. So don’t be afraid to include just your favorite pieces in addition to your bed such as your grandmother’s antique dresser or a favorite find of your own.

Embellish Your Space
Now that you have the basics in place and the tone is set with the colors on the walls you’re ready to add some charm. SoftSurroundings.com is an excellent resource for finding the perfect accessories to soften your space. From flowing bed skirts and window draperies to soft and luxurious bedding, Soft Surroundings understands the idea of making your bedroom a retreat.

When adding texture to your bedroom remember to make it soft so it invites you to curl up and escape the day’s pressures. Lastly, treat your bedroom like any other guest-visited areas of your home. Just because it’s your private room doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t add finishing touches like a plant in the corner, fresh flowers to the side table, or peaceful artwork on the walls.

Accentuate Yourself
Now that you’ve turned your room into a five-star hotel retreat don’t forget to lavish yourself with a luxurious robe, and soft plush towels to dry yourself after a good soak. Luckily SoftSurroundings.com has not forgotten about this either making it a convenient one-stop site for all your Bedroom Retreat creation needs.

Home Decor - Taurus style!

For the Taurus home, it’s all about indulging the senses. Their interior decorating is about comfort and security, but more importantly, they love to be surrounded by their things. Their things are of high quality and they obtain them with careful thought.
The way things feel to the touch, they way things smell, look and how it makes them feel is very important. Because Taurus is an earth sign, they prefer furnishings that are hand-crafted, solid wood. Pottery, potted plants and hand-crafted accessories are the focus verses the color of paint on the walls, which is usually a calm neutral palette or soft, creamy pinks and blues.
Their homes need a lot of natural light with windows and doors that can let the outdoors in. Outdoor spaces are important and they enjoy gardening.
Stability is high on their list and they don’t like a lot of change. They like to control their environment and can be stubborn when it comes to their possessions and relationships.
An English Cottage style would suit them well, as would Mediterranean, Spanish and western, as long as they have spaces where they can snuggle in and feel safe with textures that feel good next to their skin.

Unique Walls

Aries like to find and own the latest trends. For the Aries that likes the modern sleek look, Inhabits embossed wall flats are a great decorating element. Lately, I have been wanting to go more modern in my own home and I’ve had my eye on these! The options and ways of covering a wall are endless - they use peel and stick tabs, but you can use different hanging methods for a temporary look ( which is great for those of us who rent -or, are like me and like to re-decorate every 6 months!)

They are embossed 18″ x 18″ tiles made from Bamboo pulp with no chemical fillers or additives (so no trees were harmed!)
The surface is paintable and is off-white. The tiles are designed to expand in any direction. You can repeat the same pattern or mix and match the styles for a very original look.

Mod Space Shelving

I have had many homes where once you stepped in the front door, there you were, in the living room. I like entryways and it seemed I was always trying to arrange something that acted as a divider. I’ve also had homes with very large living areas in which I wanted to separate the space without sacrificing light or flow.

I wish I had this back then! It would have solved many interior decorating issues!

I love this mod shelving unit! It is great for the Aries decor that loves an unfussy sleek, bold contemporary look. Divide a room with it, create that non-existent entryway or play around with its versatility for sleek modern storage.
The fun begins when you use those cool accessories you’ve collected and can now display. As well, for storage, collect some of the fabulous covered boxes out now and keep them on the shelf, adding to your look, yet hiding the contents within.

Brave Space Design Bamboo Stagger

This large shelving unit was designed to maximize the amount of display area while creating a variety of spaces. By making the shelving sections irregular and asymmetrical it opens up the possibilities for a less traditional display of objects. You can now fit your hand-blown vase in amongst the books and family photos, next to your records and that oversized world atlas.

Sunrise Mojo

Fire is the element for Aries and the Sun is a universal symbol for fire. The sun is a sign of power, strength and success. A fiery sunrise image expresses a masculine spirit projecting energy. A beautiful way to visually express the idea of “going for it!” Artwork portraying a sunrise, with fiery reds, oranges and yellows can be a great decorating element for an Aries home.  By utilizing a variety of matting and framing, these images can fit in with either a traditional or modern decor.
Below are two fabulous sunrise pieces.

It’s Aries Style!

It’s Aries style time! Aries are bold, energetic extroverts who like living in the moment. Their homes are going to be dynamic and modern. But, Aries tend to use their home as that staging area between their many activities and projects. They need it to be organized (they tend to have a lot of things due to their involvement in a lot of activities and need those things to be contained and organized). They like first-class and the latest on the market. No living in the past for Aries. Moving forward and jumping from idea to idea, project to project…with a fiery energy.
For some Aries, their constant on-the-go lifestyle predicates a home where they can retreat from it all. But, unlike the Pisces style, for the Aries, the retreat is a private sanctuary filled with high-end, traditional style - rich, timeless and classic.

Red is a favorite color to use in decorating the Aries home. They like to make a statement and that statement is..”I am number one!!”

A Chair to Snuggle In

Did you ever have a Bean Bag or a Papazon chair? I sure did and I loved the snuggle in comfort of them (well, I didn’t love the cold/sweaty vinyl or the little Styrofoam beans ) But, I loved the idea behind it. I’m a lounge- in -comfort kinda gal and that is also what Pisces love. Well, here is the idea again, but this time, I think they got it right! Soft and cozy with the ability to hold more than one person and enable them to snuggle in and watch those very important movies/TV shows that give them the inspiration they seek. What am I talking about? Why the LoveSac of course! ( Every time I see this, I start singing ‘Love Shack’!)
Check out LoveSac’s new take on the bean bag!

LoveSac MovieSac KhakiSac

The MovieSac KhakiSac makes a great addition to your media room. You can watch all your favorite movies, television shows, and commercials in the ultimate comfort of your own home in a MovieSac. This Sac is great for your media room and play room. Don’t forget that you can enjoy all your favorite media in style with a MovieSac Designer Cover. There are many different variations of covers to suit your personality.

What’s smoother than a baby’s bottom? Nothing. The same principle that governs the science behind a newborn’s silky, smooth backside holds true for puppy fur. A grown dog’s hair is coarse (that’s why you feed them eggs–it makes their fur shiny and smooth). But puppy fur is so smooth that cashmere feels like sandpaper in comparison. We have reengineered puppy fur; we have made it stronger, faster, machine-washable, and most importantly, synthetic. You will love this fabric so much you’ll likely pant like crazy on your LoveSac (if you’re lucky). What’s this Phur? To put on your LoveSac, that’s what. We’ve simulated the finest and funkiest Phurs known to man (we even made up a few no one’s ever heard of). Be careful–curling up in one of our Phurs can induce a state of hibernation.
